“Live the questions now.
Perhaps you will then gradually,
without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Rainer Maria Rilke

Why We Gather

Intuitively, we grasp that there are multiple ways of knowing: what we reason, what our bodies understand, and what we learn only through experience.

Each form of knowledge has its gifts and limits, yet our institutions rarely let them meet. Our current educational systems and working contexts often incentivize propositional knowledge – what can be argued on the page – over embodied or experiential knowledge. These systems can also stifle the convergence of different streams of inquiry, resulting in a flood of information but a dearth of integrated knowledge.

Ways of Knowing sets out to change those conditions. Imagine an estuary, where life abounds thanks to the fertile mixing of salt and freshwater currents. We are building an estuary of knowledge, where prominent thinkers from diverse fields encounter one another around pertinent questions that no single discipline can answer alone.
